Water flows axially through the cartridge (from bottom to top), staying in contact with the filtration medium for a longer time. This, combined with the high ion exchange capacity of the medium, ensures that the water leaving the cartridge is almost entirely free of calcium and magnesium ions.

How does that work?

Hard water (containing high levels of calcium and magnesium salts) flows through the ion exchange resin in the cartridge. As a result, calcium ( Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2) ions are exchanged for sodium ions from the resin, softening the water. This eliminates the problem of scale and unpleasant water stains on fixtures.
